Australia’s New Emissions Target: What It Means for You

Two weeks ago, the Federal Government announced a bold new climate commitment to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions by 62–70% below 2005 levels by 2035. This target is based on independent advice from the Climate Change Authority and is supported by climate and finance modelling. It marks a significant acceleration in Australia’s journey to net zero by 2050, and we are excited about the momentum it is bringing to the sustainability movement.

The Net Zero Plan: Australia’s Climate Blueprint

To support the 2035 target, the Federal Government has released a national Net Zero Plan, as well as six sector-specific strategic plans. These documents outline how Australia will decarbonise key areas of the economy and unlock new opportunities for growth and sustainability in the coming decade.

Five Priority Areas for Emissions Reduction

1. Clean electricity across the economy
More renewable generation, supported by new transmission infrastructure and household battery storage.

2. Lower emissions by electrification and energy efficiency
Support for the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, electric vehicles, and programs to improve energy performance in homes and businesses.

3. Expanding clean fuel use
Establishing a low-carbon liquid fuels industry and scaling up green hydrogen production.

4. Accelerating new technologies
Driving policy changes like Future Made in Australia and supporting the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).

5. Net carbon removals scaled up
Enabling landholders to earn income through carbon storage and strengthening the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) scheme.

To support the Net Zero Plan the Federal Government also announced the establishment of a new $5 billion Net Zero Fund. The fund will enable large scale industry investments in decarbonisation as well as providing support at a local level. The government is seeking industry consultation on the proposed design of the fund until 15 October 2025.

This is more than a policy update; it’s a national turning point. It sends a clear signal to investors, industries, and communities that Australia is serious about climate action. Along with industry and big corporations, households, councils, and local organisations all have a role to play in shaping a cleaner, more resilient future.

What You Can Do: Local Actions That Matter

While we need robust national leadership to secure Australia’s climate future, here at Switch Your Thinking we strongly believe that small changes make a big difference, and local action really does matter. Here’s how you can align with the national target and make a meaningful impact in your home, workplace, and community:

  1. Power Your Home with Renewables
Install rooftop solar, switch to green power plans, or join community energy projects.
  2. Rethink How You Move
Choose active transport, public transit, or electric vehicles to reduce transport emissions.
  3. Make Your Home Energy Smart
Upgrade insulation, appliances, and lighting to improve energy efficiency and comfort.
  4. Support Sustainable Choices
Buy local, reduce waste, and choose low-impact products and services.
  5. Get Involved in Community Action
Join local sustainability groups or participate in Switch Your Thinking programs.

If you live in a council subscribed to the Switch Your Thinking program, you can even get rewarded for making some of these switches! We partner with local providers to offer discounts to residents and businesses on an array of products and services from solar systems to swimming pool covers. Check your eligibility and see the full list of offers at Rewards for Residents or Rewards for Business.
