  • A plug-in energy monitor for measuring energy consumption and the running costs of appliances.
  • A basin flow measuring cup to determine the water flow rate of your taps
  • A thermometer for measuring the temperature of rooms, fridges and freezers.
  • An instructional manual which explains how to conduct a variety of tests, tips to reduce your energy and water use, instructions on how to use the equipment and safety information. Many kits will also contain information and resources specific to your local area.

FAQs

What is the Energy Efficiency Pilot Program?

The Pilot Program is a collaboration between Switch Your Thinking and Energy Policy WA – a branch of the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification. The Program aims to educate and empower households and businesses about energy efficiency, renewable energy and electrification.

Who is funding the Energy Efficiency Pilot Program?

$500,000 in funding has been provided to Switch Your Thinking (SYT) by the Western Australian Government to enable SYT to expand its educational program throughout 2025, and to provide energy audit kits to libraries and Community Resource Centres across the State.

Who can become involved in the Energy Efficiency Pilot Program?

Seventy-four local governments have partnered with Switch Your Thinking to receive one or more energy audit kits. All participating councils and links to their websites can be found further up this page under ‘Energy Audit Kit Locations’. There is also a large range of FREE workshops related to energy efficiency, both in-person and online. The workshops cover topics including household energy use, solar panels and battery storage systems, home electrification, electric vehicles and charging, plus energy efficiency tips for businesses and carbon accounting for small to medium-sized businesses.

I am interested in some aspects of the Pilot Program but not others. Do I need to commit to all activities if I want to get involved?

You do not need to commit to all activities to participate. Energy audit kits are available for loan without attending a workshop and vice versa. However, we do recommend that you undertake as many activities as you can to gain a wide scope of information. Plus, your chance to receive and in-home energy audit (in areas where accredited Residential Scorecard assessors are based) or NatHERS assessment (for people planning/designing a new home) will be increased the more activities you participate in (I.e. one chance to receive an in-house energy audit each time you borrow an energy audit kit or attend a workshop AND complete the feedback survey).

What do the energy audit kits include?

The contents included in the energy audit kit are:

  • 1 x FLIR TG267 diagnostic thermal imaging camera
  • 1 x Power-Mate Lite 10 Amp power meter
  • 1 x Energy efficiency thermometer
  • 1 x Con-Serv basin flow measuring cup
  • 1 x An energy audit kit instruction manual

See the image below of one of the energy audit kits.

Where can I loan an energy audit kit from?

Energy Audit Kits are available through local libraries and community resource centres. A list of participating Councils and loan locations is listed above under ‘Energy Audit Loan Locations’.

How can I learn how to use an energy audit kit?

Each audit kit comes with a comprehensive user guide to explain the equipment and how to use it. A short instructional video is also available on YouTube – How to Use a Switch Your Thinking Energy Audit Kit.

Most library staff are also trained in the use of the kits and will be able to answer basic questions. Alternatively, you can contact Switch Your Thinking on energy@switchyourthinking.com or 0409 497 125.

How do I find out more about the workshops being offered through the Pilot Program?

Visit the Switch Your Thinking Eventbrite page to see upcoming events. Each event contains details about the content and registration information.

Do I need to attend a workshop before I borrow an energy audit kit?

No, you do not need to attend a workshop to borrow an energy audit kit but we highly recommend that you do!

How can I get a home energy audit undertaken by an accredited assessor?

Professional home energy audits and NatHERS assessments will be provided as prizes and only people who attend one of the Pilot Program’s workshops and/or borrow an energy audit AND fill out a survey will be eligible to go into the draw to win. Switch Your Thinking will be awarding 20 in-home energy audits or NatHERS assessments each month between April and November 2025.
