Composting with microbes

May 9 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

Come along for an informative workshop on composting with microbes and learn how to make your garden thrive!

In this workshop we will be exploring compost systems – who makes them and how, and why they are used. We will go through some different types of composts and the role microbes play.

Once we have understood composting, we will take a deep dive into microbes themselves to understand more about how these wonderful organisms work.

We’ll cover:

  • Viewing bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes
  • How populations vary over the life of the compost.
  • How microbes enrich the value of compost.
  • Microbes in composts, compost teas, and extracts
  • How to change populations of microbes in composts to be fungal dominant or bacterially dominant.

The workshop features a discussion of sampling results over the life of a compost; live viewing of soil microbes from samples from two different sorts of compost.

By the end of this session, participants will have a better understanding of how microbes affect composting and be able to make more informed decisions as to what type of compost and method of application to use.

This workshop is presented by EarthWhile and proudly organised by the City of Perth in partnership with Switch Your Thinking.
